With over 1.6 million

vehicles on the Western Australian roads, the Department of Transport in Western Australia (WA) are conscious of keeping drivers and passengers safe.

One of the easiest ways to maintain the safety of people traveling on roads in WA is to ensure that car registrations are up to date. A registration (rego) check can inform a driver, or potential buyer, whether the car has been in a major accident that’s meant it was written off – or whether it’s changed owners a lot, which can sometimes indicate that there are problems with the vehicle.

The state of WA legal requirement is that any motor vehicle in the state is registered, and the responsibility rests with the owner to ensure this is maintained.

  • Check whether a vehicle is registered in WA

  • Check car rego expiry date

  • Check Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurer and expiry date

  • Check any registration restrictions in the state

  • Confirm the vehicle model and body type

FAQ about WA rego check

You have three months from the expiry date to renew your vehicle licence without the need to return the plates and have the vehicle inspected. The renewal period will be calculated from the previous expiry date where the fees are paid within this three month period.

You can get a WA rego check for free through the Department of Transport website. You’ll just need to have the licence plate number of the car handy and enter it into the search box. Once that’s done, you’ll be able to access the vehicle’s rego information immediately.

Pay by mail, in person or online. If you choose to renew your licence for three months you can only pay by calling 1300 655 322 or through the online process.

Once your car’s registration expires, you get a 30 days grace period and it is must to renew the registration in that period as you can’t drive a car with expired registration anymore on the roads.

Section 49 of the Act provides that the maximum penalty for driving unlicensed is $300 for a first offence or, $600 for a subsequent offence and even a maximum of 18 months imprisonment in certain circumstances.

For passenger cars, SUVs and light commercial vehicles, which are all referred to as ‘light vehicles’, you pay $24.56 per 100kg. So, if your car weighed 1,300kg, your licence fee would be $319.28 (as at July 2021).

You will need identification (PDF) if applying in person at a Driver and Vehicle Services Centre or regional agent or you can buy copies of vehicle licence papers online through DoTDirect.

The amount varies from State to State. In WA, it starts at 2.75 per cent of the purchase price for cars under 4.5 tonnes with a dutiable value of $25,033 or below and then increases the more the car is worth. It eventually tops out at 6.5 per cent for cars with a dutiable value of $49,968 and above.
